Taekwon-Do's Sine Wave

Hwaldung Pahdo

Sine wave is a movement unique to “Orthodox” or “ITF” Taekwon-do to create the maximum force in every movement according to the “Theory of Power” as printed in the Taekwon-do Encyclopedias.  In almost every movement sine wave is utilized.   Most people are under the mistaken impression that Sine wave is new, it is not, and it occurs natural in both science and the world in general.  A classic “look” at the Sine wave we do not have to look any further then the Republic of Korea (South Korean) flag the Taekukki (태극기) in figure 1. below.  As you can see the Um/Yang or Ying and Yang part of the flag is in essence a Sine wave.

While the use of the Sine wave in Taekwon-do could be traced back to the beginning of its inception, it was not truly recognized until the mid 1970s and not “fully” implemented within the ITF until the 1980s.

What is actually done when performing the sine wave in Taekwon-do techniques the center of our body mass being moved by this motion, much in the same manner as the figure 2 below.

The benefits using Sine wave are also linked to the “Training Secrets of Taekwon-do as well, which again was written by General Choi in his Taekwon-do Encyclopedias.  Move your center mass in the Sine wave motion requires you to keep both your legs and arms bent while in motion.  To do this, you need to keep relaxed as your carrying out the motion.  Relaxing the body adds speed to the motion as your body is not tensed up with different parts of the body working against the other.  And as you know from studying the Theory of Power and the Secrets of Taekwon-do, small increases in speed can produce large increase in power.

When performing the Sine Wave you have to use the knee spring properly.  It is the bending of the knee that that moves the body up and down as we perform the techniques.  Using the knee spring while your body is in motion allows your body mass to travel along the curves of the Sine wave, which is another form of acceleration.  When using the Sine Wave you are dropping your body downwards at the end of each technique which helps you use gravity to your advantage and keep acceleration building upon impact.

To correctly apply the Sine wave in Taekwon-do you need to modify the shape of the wave before you can achieve maximum power.
