CANADA / BY PETER WARD\ A KOREAN PLOT? (Reported Boston Globe – 28 FEBRUARY 1982)
Author: Peter Ward
Two Toronto men, Charles Stephen Yanover*, 36, and Alexander Michael Gerol, 33, were arrested Wednesday and charged with conspiracy to murder South Korean President Chun Doo Hwan. The six-month investigation involved police in the United States, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, West Germany, France, Martinique, and South Korea. Police seized $68,000 which they say was part of a payoff, and two other men, Nathan Israel Klegerman, 52, of Toronto and Jung Hwa Choi, 33, a former Toronto man now in North Korea, are also being sought.

*Charles Stephen Yanover had a nightclub on Yonge Street in Toronto called Cooper’s. He was known to some as Chuck the Bike , because he once owned City Custom Cycle and sold motorcycles to outlaw bikers.

But guns were his specialty. He knew all about them, how they worked, how to get them, how to smuggle them. He would sell them to anyone, even American white supremacists. Some say he was obsessed with guns. He also knew a thing or two about explosives.

As the head of a branch of the mob,Yanover had his own soldiers. He had been in and out of prisons since the age of 25. A prison shrink called him opportunistic and egocentric. His police file identified his as an international arms dealer and mercenary.

On March 9,10,11 2001 in Budapest, Hungary (At an International Instructors Course) General Choi, Hong Hi then President of the International Taekwon-Do Federation “unofficially” announced that then Master Choi, JungWha, Secretary General of the ITF, would be the next president of the I.T.F. This “unofficial” meeting was called by General Choi, with Master Choi, and Grandmaster Rhee present along with Master Laszlo Harmat along with another 280 witnesses being present when told that Master Choi, JungWha would be the next ITF leader in 2003. It was announced that it would become official at the 2001 XII Senior World Championships held in Rimini, Italy on July 24 2001. Here it was announced that Master Choi would replace his father in 2003. However, in January 2002 an “Extraordinary ITF Congress” was held in order to remove Secretary General Choi, JungWha as the next president of the ITF. It is this “Extraordinary Congress” that is a matter of concern.

Grandmaster Choi, has now lost about 90% of the members he had just a couple of years ago. (Ok, I was wrong, thanks to a former Kido Kwan member for being so observant; it is only 83.15% by the math as of Feb. 2008!)In the USA alone he at one time had close to ten INO’s or ISD’s however, he has less then six now, and one or two will not be renewing for the year 2008. Grandmaster Choi has recently lost his right to use the ITF trademarks in Canada, and was a no call no show for his members when he was to appear in court to fight for his members. He lost the court judgment and now has to pay the ITF under Tran Quan upwards of 65,000 (Canadian) Please look here to review the court documents! .

To give another perspective, here are the losses for “senior ranks” (USA ONLY) those that are IV Dan and higher. When totaled this represents a loss of 59% of senior ranks! NEWLY UPDATED 01SEPT2010!

VIII Dan (8th) 50% Loss from 25%

VII Dan (7th) 53% Loss from 50%

VI Dan (6th) 65% Loss from 67% (a gain!)

V Dan (5th) 75% Loss (same)

IV Dan (4th) 52% Loss (same)

But if you were to use all the “seniors” from 4th Dan to 9th Dan that he has lost that equals 78% LOSS! (as of 01APR08)

IX Dan (9th) 0% Loss 1 Active

VIII Dan (8th) 61% Loss 7 Active out of 18

VII Dan (7th) 71% Loss 19 Active out of 65

VI Dan (6th) 88% Loss 20 Active out of 143

V Dan (5th Dan) 89% Loss 26 Active out of 207

IV Dan (4th) 70% Loss 116 Active out of 390

Mr. Choi Jung-Hwa, at the press conference

Choi Jung-Hwa, son of the legendary founder of Korea’s native martial art of Taekwon-Do will come to Seoul on Sept. 8, 2008, a government source announced on Sept. 7, 2008.

The 54-year-old Choi Jung Hwa has been living in Canada for the last 36 years (since 1972) as his father Choi Hong-Hi ((???,1918~2002) had been working as the founder of International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), which had been leaning toward North Korea in its support/activities.

The source said on the day that Mr. Choi Jung Hwa was expected to arrive in Seoul from Narita Airport in Tokyo, Japan in the morning of Sept. 8, 2008. Choi has stated “I’ll cooperate fully with the investigation.”

He will be investigated by the South Korean intelligence agency on his admitted espionage activities for North Korea, according to the source. For which he served Federal Time in Canada for his involvement in the assassination plot. Receiving a six year term. But serving less for good behavior.

The source was quoted as saying that Mr. Choi did in fact express his willingness to return to South Korea through the South Korean Embassy in Canada (Toronto) in June (2008), saying he wants to return to South Korea.

Late Choi Hong Hi:
Founder of Taekwondo —
(? ??; ???; Nov. 9 1918–15 June 2002), also known as General Choi, was a S. Korean army general and martial artist who is a controversial figure in the history of the Korean martial art of Taekwon-Do. Choi is widely regarded as the ‘Founder of Taekwon-Do’—most often by International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) organization.

Mr. Choi, a Canadian citizen, had been involved in pro-North Korean activities after he and his father left South Korea in 1972. They defected to Canada amid serious feuds with then-South Korean President Park Chung-Hee.

In a recent interview with the magazine JoongAng Sunday in Tokyo, Mr. Choi said “among the ITF Taekwon-Do masters an instructors were many North Korean agents.”

“They were trained by North Korea’s Workers’ Party and sent to foreign countries for espionage activities,” Choi was quoted as saying.

Mr. Choi also said that he was involved in the attempted assassination of then-South Korean President Chun Do-Hwan in 1981 on the order of North Korean government.

Mr. Choi allegedly fled to North Korea from Canada in July of 1981 when their plan was detected by Canadian police to assassinate South Korean President Chun Doo-Hwan on his visit to Canada.

As a grand master himself, Mr. Choi Jung Hwa was born on the Korea’s southernmost island of Jeju. Mr. Choi started practicing Taekwon-Do at the age of seven under the guidelines of his father, Gen. Choi, Hong-Hi. Just like his father, he taught and popularized Taekwon-Do all over the world. He is known to be the person who introduced and developed Taekwon-Do in several Eastern European countries in particular.

Established in 1966 by Choi Hong-Hi, the legendary of founder of Korean Taekwon-Do, ITF has been divided in the world of Taekwon-Do with South Korean-based the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF).

The late Choi Hong-Hi, who founded Taekwon-Do in 1955, and served as a military commander in South Korea. He also supported South Korean President Park Chung-Hee when Park staged a military coup in 1961.

But Choi was discharged from the military against his own will amid a feud with dictator Park Chung-Hee. Afterwards Choi served as South Korean ambassador to Malaysia, but eventually he defected to Canada amid a serious disagreement with then-President Park.

His ITF had been hugely powerful among the followers of Taekwon-Do throughout the world with tens of thousands of followers.

But South Korean government founded another Taekwondo organization, World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) in 1973.

The two Taekwon-Do bodies have been dividing world’s Taekwon-Do members ever since.

In his promotion of Taekwon-Do to the world the late Choi had been supported by the late North Korean leader Kim Il-Sung.

When Mr. Choi Hong Hi died in 2002 the son of Kim Il-Sung, Kim Jong-Il expressed deep sorrow by sending funeral flowers. He was buried in the site for the patriots in Pyongyang.

Mr. Choi even became an object for a movie in North Korea for his heroic behavior in Taekwon-Do.

As native of Myeongcheon, North Korea’s North Hamgyeong Province, Mr. Choi Hong Hi had visited North Korea over 20 times in his later life (1978-2002).

Mr. Choi has stated he would like to personally apologize to former President Chun and the daughter of Former President Park as well.
