Eric Madis began martial arts study in the early 1960s, learning judo and jujutsu from books. His karate training began during the summers of 1964 and1965, learning Shin Goju-ryu under former Denver policeman and (martial arts) Master Frank Goody of the American Budo College. Later he studied judo at Northglenn Judo Club (1965-1966). In 1974 he trained and assisted in a jujutsu-based, millitary police defense program at the University of Illinois. He resumed karate (tangsoodo) training in 1982, first under Grandmaster Jung Kil Kim (MooDukKwan #123) and later under Grandmaster Jae Joon Kim (MooDukKwan #38), from whom he earned 1st and 2nd degree black belt (MooDukKwan #15710). Over the decades, he has also trained with tangsoodo Masters Jung Lee, Mike Shintaku, Eric Kim, Dennis McHenry and Robert Davis; with aikido Masters Gakku Homma and Bruce Bookman; with taekwondo Master Nhumey Tropp; and with hapkido Grandmaster J.R. West and is currently 5th degree black belt in tangsoodo. Mr. Madis has a B.A. in physiological psychology from the University of Illinois, is a published martial arts historian and was awarded Martial Arts Writer of the Year in 2014 from the International Ryukyu Karate Research Society.
